In a small workshop on Miyajima island, the Nakamura family has shaped hinoki cypress into shamoji for over sixty years. Each paddle is carved by hand — no two are alike. The wood is sourced from the mountains of Hiroshima, air-dried for six months, then worked with the same tools the grandfather first used.
The Story
Miyajima has been the home of shamoji since 1800, when a monk dreamed of the goddess Benzaiten and carved the first rice paddle in her likeness. Today, the island's shamoji are considered engimono — objects of good fortune. The shape is said to "scoop up" happiness and prosperity.
